You can’t actually go down to the beach, but you still get a great view of these animals from the viewing area. We started by going to an elephant seal viewing area in San Simeon before heading into Big Sur. It’s also very easy to add Hearst Castle onto this trip! Hearst Castle is right in San Simeon, and would be a great place to stop and take a tour of before heading up through Big Sur into more of northern California. We had some spots in mind that we wanted to see (McKay Falls and Bixby Bridge being our top two), but knew that we would stop whenever we saw a good viewing point or anything that caught our interest. We left at 5 am, and got up to this area around 10 am. You could absolutely drive over to Santa Monica and start the drive from there to do the entire thing up the coast, but to save us time, we took the 101 most of the way up until we hit the 1 in San Simeon. My husband and I did the drive up to San Simeon from the Burbank area. My husband and I decided that we would drive up through Big Sur, stop in Carmel, spend the night in San Jose, and end with the Winchester Mystery House before heading back to Los Angeles. Ever since I was a little girl, I have been fascinated with all things creepy and “haunted”, and the Winchester Mystery House always interested me. I had already been to San Francisco, so when it came to driving up the PCH from Los Angeles, I had a different end goal in mind. If you had about a week, I feel like doing the drive from LA to San Francisco would be doable if you wanted to see both cities. If you had two to three weeks and really wanted to see a good chunk of California, I would recommend starting in San Diego and driving all the way up to San Francisco. ![]() I feel like there are definitely many ways you could experience driving up the PCH. Driving up the Pacific Coast Highway, from San Simeon to San Jose, was one of the most incredible things I have ever done. The hammers finally stopped in September of 1922 when she died.I had a few things on my must-do list when moving out to the west coast: go to the Grand Canyon, San Francisco, and drive up the Pacific Coast Highway. Those thirty rooms remained sealed until her death. Winchester then had thirty of the front rooms boarded up, and continued building onto the backside of the house. Winchester believed it was a warning sign from the spirits that she had spent far too much money on the front portion of the house. Damage occurred to the front part of the house resulting from the earthquake, but Mrs. Winchester when she found herself temporarily trapped in one of the bedrooms. When the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 occurred, this deeply frightened Mrs. Winchester took the existence of these spirits very seriously. Winchester held the only key to the séance room and was the only (living) person allowed in it. ![]() Bars line the windows in this ominous room, there’s a secret passage, and there’s only one entrance, despite the three non-returnable exits. Winchester supposedly conferred nightly with the spirits and where she received their instructions on building this ever-growing house. In the center of this monumental manor is the séance room. Photo courtesy of The Winchester Mystery House Sarah found and purchased the San Jose farmhouse and began construction immediately, continuing the building process for an uninterrupted period of thirty-eight years. ![]() Sarah followed this advice, leaving her home in New Haven, Connecticut, and traveling clear across the country to California. The medium explained to Sarah that in order to escape this unfortunate fate, she was to move out west, buy a home, and build onto it continuously to avoid the havoc of these angry spirits. It’s been said the psychic informed Sarah her family had been cursed by those killed by The Winchester Rifle. Still grieving the loss of her only child and now her husband, legend has it that a distraught Sarah consulted with a medium for guidance. Winchester then became an heiress to a considerably large portion of the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune. Fifteen years later, she faced another tragedy when William’s short-lived presidency of the firearms company ended with his sudden death of tuberculosis. Sarah’s life of turmoil began when the couple’s first and only child died within weeks of her birth. Winchester Repeating Arms Company, a renowned American producer of repeatingįirearms and the ever-popular Winchester Rifle. Winchester, who would eventually become the 2 nd president of The Well-educated, an accomplished pianist, and was fluent in multiple languages.
